Ten Actions Toward Being an Antiracist New Urbanist

At the recent CNU.29 Design for Change, a virtual conference by the Congress for New Urbanism, Karen Parolek hosted a capstone seminar on the roles and responsibilities of New Urbanists in dismantling systemic racism in the United States.

The seminar featured Ifeoma Ebo, Founding Director and Strategist at the Creative Urban Alchemy, Marques King, Principal at Fabric[k] Design, and Sara Bronin, Founder of Desegregate Connecticut.

Panelists explored how work done by New Urbanists could contribute to dismantling systemic racism through purposeful, antiracist land use and community development. They identified ways in which the New Urbanism platform fails to be actively antiracist and recommended actionable steps that new urbanists can take to be antiracist in their work, regardless of where they are in their career.
